With so many different types of Yoga, it can be overwhelming to identify the best one for you. Amanda Phares, RecSports Yoga Instructor, has put together this guide with the inside scoop on what to expect in the Yoga styles currently offered through our TeXercise group exercise program.

Power Flow Yoga

Power Flow Yoga combines Pranayama (breathwork) and strength-based Vinyasa flow practice to build heat in the body and help you get closer to attempting more advanced yoga poses. Modifications and props are used heavily to make this class accessible for all levels!

Know before you go: While this style of yoga is open to all levels, you will get the most out of this class if you have prior yoga experience. Expect to sweat. This flow is designed to be challenging and will heat the body from the inside out while creating a dynamic, advanced experience that strengthens the core.

Athletic Flow Yoga

Athletic Flow Yoga is your opportunity to incorporate some “yoga conditioning,” or a little more intensity into your practice. Work towards developing strength and endurance, and explore the relationship of breath alongside movement. Some yoga experience is recommended.

Know before you go: You can benefit from the slow and purposeful movements of this style of yoga no matter your experience level. In this style, you can expect to hold poses longer and re-engage your parasympathetic nervous system.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga is a full-body workout designed to help you maintain a healthy body, improve your metabolism, teach you to move with your breath, and develop mind-body awareness. This style of yoga is fast-paced and incorporates dynamic movements with modifications at every pose.

Know before you go: You can expect to sweat as you move in ways that focus on stretching and strengthening the entire body in synchronization with your breath, all while finding the pace that’s best for you.

Holistic Yoga

Come as you are and observe the interconnectedness of your body, mind, emotions, and spirit in practicing Holistic Yoga. This inclusive practice will teach you about yoga as a way of life, and the ways that yoga mirrors life through Asanas (poses), Pranayama (breathwork), meditation, and more.

Know before you go: Breathwork sessions, meditation, and creative sequencing are integrated into Holistic Yoga to ground and deepen your practice no matter where you are on your yogic journey.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga focuses on strengthening and lengthening your deep connective tissues. This practice is slow-paced and incorporates meditation and deep stretches into each session to teach you how to work with discomfort and foster mind-body awareness.

Know before you go: Expect to hold poses for longer in slow and juicy flows that emphasize cooling the body and lengthening your muscles.

Yoga & Meditation

Yoga & Meditation is a class designed to combine the benefits of a physical yoga practice with the calming and stress-relieving benefits of meditation. Meditation is designed to relax the nervous system and create a clear and open headspace, so you can expect to leave this class feeling good in your body and mind!

Know before you go: Breathe deep and enjoy a fun flow partnered with a meditation practice.

YinYasa Yoga

This class combines the strengthening and dynamic aspects of Vinyasa Yoga with the restorative and relaxing aspects of Restorative and Yin Yoga. During this practice, you’ll enjoy a creative flow to build heat in the body that also dedicates a good portion of time to softening and relaxing in restorative poses.

Know before you go: This class spends equal time moving through a dynamic style flow and resting in restorative poses. You can expect to spend some extra time holding poses, focusing on your breath, and exploring the connection between movement and stillness.

Yoga Fundamentals

This class will enable you to understand the basics of movement and transitions in yoga, as well as assist you in developing a mind-body connection and practicing down-regulation of the nervous system.

Know before you go: This class is great for beginners who hope to deepen their journey and studies in yoga and breathwork.

Meditation for Joy

Meditation is a practice that will calm the mind, regulate breathing, and can assist with anxiety. This class will help you learn techniques to control attention and achieve mental and emotional stability, with an emphasis on cultivating joy in your everyday life.
